As well as our home area, the Axarquía, MURES builds escollera rock walls in the Guadalhorce valley, the Montes de Málaga and along the Costa del Sol. It’s an area of sloping fincas, hillside urbanisations and streams running down from the mountains, where escollera is the longest-lasting way to retain soil, build terraces and protect tracks.

We work here with a trusted local team and coordinate every job from MURES, with a fixed written quote. If you’d like to understand how the system works first, see our guide to escollera rock walls in Málaga.

The work we do with escollera walls in the Guadalhorce

  • Terraces on almond, olive and citrus fincas.
  • Walls on rural tracks that sink or get undermined in the rain.
  • Terraces for pools, gardens and parking on sloping plots.
  • Stabilising embankments in hillside urbanisations.
  • Protecting stream banks, with Junta de Andalucía authorisation.

Why escollera works in this area

The autumn 2024 DANA storms and the 2025 storms damaged tracks, embankments and stream banks in towns such as Almogía, Cártama, Alhaurín el Grande, Álora and Pizarra. The authorities have used escollera in many of the repairs because it’s a free-draining wall: water passes between the blocks without building up pressure, and it copes with small ground movements without cracking.

On private plots, escollera walls in the Guadalhorce work the same way, as long as they’re built properly: foundations below natural ground level, blocks sized to the height, a lean into the slope and a drain pipe with gravel and geotextile behind.

If the work is within 100 m of a stream, as well as the municipal licence you need Junta de Andalucía authorisation: authorisation for works in the zona de policía (in Spanish).

Escollera wall prices in the Guadalhorce

There is no fixed price for escollera walls in the Guadalhorce and on the Costa del Sol: it depends on the length and height of the wall, the stone size and the conditions of each plot. How much does an escollera wall cost in this area?

There is no fixed price: an escollera wall in this area is quoted according to its length, height, the stone size needed, access for lorries and machinery and the type of ground. What changes the price most is the height, the stone size and access: a finca on a dirt track in Almogía is not the same as a plot next to the A-357.

Is there an escollera wall company near me in the Guadalhorce or on the Costa del Sol?

Call or WhatsApp +34 686 746 094 with the location and a few photos of the ground and we’ll advise you with no obligation.

What is an escollera wall and what is it used for?

An escollera wall is a retaining wall made of large natural stone blocks (usually 300 to 2,000 kg) placed one by one with machinery, without mortar. It is used to hold back soil on slopes, create terraces, stabilise embankments, protect tracks and reinforce stream banks. It stands up through its own weight and the way the blocks interlock, and it lets water pass between the stones.

What are the advantages of an escollera wall over a concrete wall?

It’s free-draining (water passes between the stones without building up pressure), copes with small ground movements without cracking, blends into the landscape and is usually quicker and cheaper than a reinforced concrete wall of the same height. On the other hand, it takes up more space at the base and needs access for a lorry and digger. On sloping fincas and plots in the Guadalhorce it’s usually the best option.

What type of stone is used in an escollera wall?

Hard quarry rock, usually limestone in Málaga, in irregular light grey or beige blocks. The size depends on the height: for walls up to 1.5 m, blocks of 300 to 800 kg; between 1.5 and 3 m, 800 to 2,000 kg; and above that, larger blocks with a technical calculation. Our quotes always state the weight of stone we’ll use.

Do I need a licence to build an escollera wall?

Usually, yes: a building licence or a declaración responsable at the town hall, depending on the size of the wall and the land classification. If the wall is within 100 m of a stream or river (zona de policía), you also need authorisation from the Junta de Andalucía water authority. This is common in the Guadalhorce, with so many watercourses. We’ll advise you on what to apply for before we start.

How long does it take to build an escollera wall?

A typical finca-sized wall, 15 to 30 m long and around 2 m high, takes about 3 to 8 working days: digging the foundations, placing the blocks, drainage and backfill. It takes longer if it rains, if access is difficult or if we have to wait for permits. We give you an approximate date in the quote.

What maintenance does an escollera wall need?

Very little. Once a year, especially after heavy rain, check that the drain outlet isn’t blocked, that no blocks at the base have moved and that run-off water isn’t falling straight onto the top of the wall. A well-founded, well-drained escollera wall can last decades without any work.

How do I ask for an escollera wall quote?

The quickest way is to send us the location of the plot on WhatsApp with 2 or 3 photos of the ground and a rough idea of the length and height of the wall. With that we can give you some initial advice and, if it suits you, arrange a visit to measure and check access. Then we send you a fixed written quote, with the type of stone, timescale and conditions. The visit and the quote are free and with no obligation.
