What is stamped concrete?
Stamped concrete (also called pattern imprinted concrete) is a continuous concrete slab that is coloured and imprinted with a mould while still fresh, recreating stone, slate, cobbles or wood. It is then sealed with resin. It is mainly used outdoors: driveways, patios, terraces, paths and pool surrounds.
How is stamped concrete laid?
Stamped concrete is laid in six steps: a compacted hardcore base is prepared, steel mesh is placed, 10–15 cm of HA-25 concrete is poured, colour hardener is broadcast, the surface is imprinted with moulds and, after 24–48 hours, the control joints are cut. Finally it is washed and given two coats of sealing resin.
How much does stamped concrete cost per m²?
As a guide, stamped concrete costs between €30 and €45 per m² for jobs of 50 to 150 m², plus VAT, including materials, colour, pattern and sealing. Smaller areas cost more per m², and ground preparation is priced separately. Ask us for a free quote for your project.
How long does stamped concrete last?
Well-laid stamped concrete lasts more than 25–30 years. The key is a well-compacted hardcore base, steel mesh and joints cut on time in panels of no more than 15–16 m². To keep the colour looking its best, reseal it every 2–3 years.
How thick should stamped concrete be?
Stamped concrete should be 10 cm thick for pedestrian areas such as patios, terraces or paths, and 12–15 cm where cars will drive. For heavy vehicles it goes up to 15–20 cm with reinforced mesh. Always on a compacted hardcore base of 15–20 cm.
Is stamped concrete or block paving better for a driveway?
For a driveway, stamped concrete is usually the better option from around 40–50 m²: it costs the same or less, has no loose blocks or sand joints for weeds to grow in, and it is a continuous slab that spreads the load. Block paving is easier to repair piece by piece.
Can stamped concrete be laid over an existing slab?
Yes, as long as the existing slab is sound – no moving cracks or subsidence – and there is enough height for at least 7–10 cm of new concrete. It is cleaned, a bonding agent is applied and the joints of the slab below are respected. If the old slab is in poor condition, it needs to come up.
Can stamped concrete be laid in winter or in high summer?
On the Málaga coast, stamped concrete can be laid almost all year round. In summer we start early in the morning so the concrete doesn’t set too fast. In winter we avoid rainy days and frost, which inland in the Axarquía can damage the colour layer in the first few days.
